Began research on breeding high-nutrition rice during doctoral studies under Assoc. Prof. Dr. Apichart Vanavichit at the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University. The thesis focused on breeding rice with high iron content and tolerance to iron toxicity, drawing on natural genetic variation through crossbreeding, which led to the high-iron varieties Sin Lek and Niew Hom Nual. At the same time, mutation breeding induced by fast neutron irradiation led to the discovery of the mutant ‘MuFRO’, which carries a mutation in the gene OsFRO1 (LOC_Os04g36720) and shows tolerance to iron toxicity. This variety suits iron-rich soils, which are common across Southeast Asia. During the study, took part in a project to breed irrigated-lowland rice resistant to blast, bacterial leaf blight and brown planthopper, tolerant to flash flooding, and with a low glycemic index, using a new breeding method called Pseudo backcrossing gene pyramiding (pMBP) to combine five genes (Sub1C, xa5, Xa21, TPS, SSiia) and three QTLs (qBph3, qBL1, qBL11) into the genetic background of ‘Pin Kaset 3’, a fragrant, photoperiod-insensitive, high-yielding rice, resulting in the new variety ‘Pin Kaset+4’. This new gene pyramiding technique shortens the time needed to develop new varieties with more complex breeding traits. OsFRO1 (LOC_Os04g36720) tolerated Fe toxicity in the vegetative stage. This mutant could facilitate rice production in the high-Fe soil found in Southeast Asia. During my study, I have attended the project for improving irrigated rice with tolerance to flash flooding, resistance to multiple isolates of bacterial leaf blight, blast (BLB), brown plant hopper (BPH), and low glycemic index (GI) on the high yielding, non-photoperiod sensitive, aromatic variety ‘PinK3’.   The innovative marker-assisted pseudo-backcross gene pyramiding (pMBP) was designed to shorten a conventional marker-assisted backcross gene pyramiding.  That pMBP facilitated rapid recombining five functional genes (Sub1C, xa5, Xa21, TPS, SSiia) and three QTLs (qBph3, qBL1, qBL11) into the favorable PinK3 genomic background.  New rice varieties were called 'Pinkaset + 4'. This new pyramiding platform decreases the time required to generate new rice varieties exhibiting complex, durable resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in backgrounds with desirable qualities.
