High Throughput SNP Genotyping Course

· 2 min read

3–7 September 2010

The Rice Science Center and the Agricultural Research Development Agency (Public Organization) opened the High Throughput SNP Genotyping Course, a practical training course. The success in decoding the genomes, or gene codes, of various economic crops such as rice, maize and soybean has been used as important reference genomes to find the best molecular markers for breeding, called Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP).

Using SNP markers in breeding makes breeding faster. However, the concept of developing molecular markers needs to change techniques: molecular diversity can be studied at the gene level, and importantly SNP genotyping will be a key technique in association mapping, replacing conventional mapping in finding key genes, making gene discovery easier. Moreover, using SNP markers is limited by expensive equipment, so personnel should be developed to understand experimental planning and the design of suitable laboratories.
