The Rice Research Center advises the government to encourage farmers to grow rice varieties that tolerate flooding, bacterial leaf blight and brown planthopper to raise yield in the current changing climate.

A concrete pool 30 meters wide, 30 meters long and 5 meters deep is a rice testing station under flood disaster conditions at the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus. It is one of the research efforts to develop rice lines in response to climate change and increasingly severe natural disasters, to produce rice varieties that tolerate every environment, using biotechnology through the DNA laboratory to breed by analyzing genes with specific outstanding traits. The Center has been able to invent rice varieties with greater tolerance that farmers can grow, for example rice that tolerates flooding for 1–2 weeks, namely Khao Dawk Mali 105, Hom Chonlasit rice and Hom Mali 80 (RD51). The rice that tolerates flooding, bacterial leaf blight, neck blast and brown planthopper is Hom Mali+4, which farmers have not known much about because it has lacked serious promotion. The research team is now developing rice lines that additionally tolerate heat, drought and salinity, building on the Pin Kaset+4 variety, which suits irrigated areas, gives high yield and low sugar, with results expected by the end of this year.
