The Rice Science Center, together with the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, has bred various rice lines with traits suited to cultivation and tolerance to disease, insects and changing environments, so that rice farmers can reduce their use of production inputs and increase income. But that is not enough for the future rice trading system, which will regulate greenhouse gas emissions from rice growing. The “4ME” project was therefore created.
Reduce 4: Four Moderation
1. Reduce water use with the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) system 2. Reduce carbon emissions by using clean-energy machinery 3. Reduce straw burning and reduce straw fermentation under flooded conditions to cut methane (CH₄) emissions 4. Reduce use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural chemicals that affect the environment
Increase 4: Four Enhancement
1. Increase water use efficiency 2. Increase use of clean energy in the production process 3. Increase the disease, insect and environmental resistance of rice varieties 4. Increase straw management and carbon sequestration in paddy soil
8 rice lines are being tested in the 4ME system
to disseminate the information so that farmers and related parties can use it in production and sales, enabling Thailand to become a fully carbon-neutral rice exporter.
