The Minister of Science and Technology visited the demonstration rice plot of "Hom Chonlasit, flash-flood-tolerant rice" and led a team to help flood victims with science and technology. On 29 October 2010, Dr. Virachai Virameteekul, Minister of Science and Technology, together with NSTDA executives led by Dr. Thaweesak Koanantakool, Dr. Kanyawim Kirtikara, Prof. Dr. Sirirurg Songsivilai and Dr. Theerayut Toojinda, visited the operations and the demonstration rice plot of"Hom Chonlasit, flash-flood-tolerant rice" in the area where BIOTEC works together with the Phak Hai Agricultural Cooperative, and led a team into the area to help flood victims in Phak Hai District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. On this occasion, relief bags were given to more than 200 flood-affected farming households in the area.
"Hom Chonlasit" is one of BIOTEC's rice variety development research results and has now been transferred to members of the Phak Hai Agricultural Cooperative for trial planting in farmers' demonstration plots. It is special in being able to tolerate flooding for more than 2 weeks. Phak Hai District is an area that suffers repeated flooding every year. "Hom Chonlasit" will be able to help solve the problems of farmers in the area well, and the nano mosquito-killing nets research of NANOTEC is another NSTDA work used to ease the hardship of the flood victims, who have to use temporary shelters to sleep and can use the nets to keep off mosquitoes and prevent the epidemics that come with them. The Minister distributed the nano mosquito-killing nets to more than 200 households in the area. This is an example of bringing science and technology to relieve the hardship of people hit by floods, and we have seen that NSTDA's research can solve the country's problems "sustainably".
