On 16 March 2021 at the KU 50th Anniversary Information Building, Kasetsart University, Dr. Jongrak Watcharinrat, President of Kasetsart University, presided over the ceremony to receive a research grant toimprove hemp varietiessuited to Thailand that can produce flowers with the highest Cannabinoid (CBD) content, and to support the project to establish the Center of Excellence for Hemp and Herbs of Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province,
by Mr. Chanin Hengcharoensuk, Managing Director of Nong Khai Power Drink (CC Double Beverage) Co., Ltd. and Gol Green Wellness Group Co., Ltd. together with their executives, who wished to give a research grant of 10 million baht to Kasetsart University, to be given to researchers Prof. Dr. Apichart Vanavichit, Director of the Rice Science Center, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pichet Anurakudom and the Medical Cannabis Research Laboratory team, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Science, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, to carry out research according to the objectives, for development and use in industry, bringing hemp into commercial use or the medical industry. On this occasion, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nikom Laemsak, Vice President for Innovation and Social Engagement, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Weerachai Phutthawong, Assistant President for Innovation and Social Engagement, also took part in the ceremony.
When the restrictions on “hemp” are lifted, it will be a huge leap forward. The research team will take “hemp”from America and the Netherlands, about 10 varieties, and breed new varieties to suit Thailand's climate and terrain, because “hemp varieties” abroad are short plants growing in cold climates, and in foreign areas there are no insects, unlike Thailand, which is hot and has many insects.
“The researchers will clone the hemp varieties to multiply seed quickly using research processes, and then select the varieties that adapt to Thai farming patterns, to be grown in the after-rice season. They must be short-lived, flower early and have CBD much higher than THC. The hemp laboratory has now found which varieties abroad have properties close to what we need.” Prof. Dr. Apichart Vanavichit said.
In addition, irradiation techniques, which we are skilled in and which have given good results, such as in making Rainbow Rice, induced mutation using radioactivity, chemical mutagens or genetic engineering, will also be used together in breeding the hemp varieties this time.
