“Sailing a Boat to Find a Single Rice Plant, Rich or Poor, the Heart Loves It”

· 2 min read

On 20 November 2025, researchers of the Rice Science Center went into the field to collect data and monitor the growth of the floating rice variety RD89 grown in a repeatedly flooded area within Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus. The aim is to study rice's ability to adapt to changing environments and to use the results to develop a set of varieties suited to flood-prone areas in the future.

The RD89 experimental plot was hit by a flash flood when the rice was only 30 days old. At the time the plants were about 50 centimeters tall, but the flood reached 175 centimeters and stood continuously for as long as 80 days. Monitoring found that some plants could elongate their internodes to escape the water and keep growing.

At present, the rice in the experimental plot has reached the booting stage and some has begun heading. It is expected to be harvestable in about 40 days. The results of this study will be important data for developing flood-tolerant rice varieties and for supporting Thailand's future climate change situation.
