When the University Joins Hands with the Community… “Leftovers” Become Hope

· 4 min read

When a university joins hands with a community, development is not just bringing knowledge but creating opportunity for local people to rise up and change their own home.

Another step of the Regenerative Burn-Free Rice Project for Clean Air and High-Value Markets (Clean Air Rice) took place at Ban Pamok, Pai District, Mae Hong Son Province, bringing knowledge of economic mushroom production to turn rice straw, stubble, corn stalks and agricultural residues into food, careers and income.

This drive comes from the strength of many sectors, including the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University, which links rice and agricultural residue management knowledge, and the Kamphaeng Saen Extension and Training Office, which brings expertise in knowledge transfer and career development to the community.

Ajarn Suwit Kamkongkaew, a mushroom production expert, together with Mrs. Rungrattana Chamsing and Mr. Thanet Srisuk, Senior Professional Level Agricultural Officers of the Kamphaeng Saen Extension and Training Office, shared knowledge from production and use of local materials to cost reduction and building it into a career.

Meanwhile the Domestic Tourism Business Association, through Mr. Sanyaphut Kerdbundit (Sato), the association's president, and Mr. Phaiphat Suwapornkonrat, vice president, joined in linking the community's potential with tourism and markets, because when a community has products, a story and an identity, tourism can bring people to know, learn and create value for what the community does.

Ban Pamok in Pai District in particular, an area visited by many tourists, has an opportunity to develop its knowledge of mushrooms and use of residues into community products, learning activities and creative tourism.

But the most important thing in this story may not be “mushrooms” and not only “income”.

It is “the happiness of the people in the community”.

Because when leftovers are not burned but turned into careers,
when careers create income,
when income creates security,
people have a reason not to leave home to look for work far away.

Parents have their children and grandchildren back living nearby
Families have time together
The elderly still have a role
The young generation sees a future in their hometown

From “Don't burn” it becomes “There are options”

Not burning → making use
Leftovers → create careers
Careers → create income
Income → creates security
Security → makes people want to come home
Coming home → brings love and warmth back to the community

This is the meaning of Clean Air Rice

We are not just creating cleaner air to reduce PM2.5, but building communities with careers, income, markets, happiness and a future.

The goal is therefore not just for community members to “know how to do it” but to go on to become “teachers”, from model households to occupational groups to learning centers, and possibly a model for other communities to follow.

Because true development is not making people leave home to look for a future

but making them look back and realize that

“Our home… can create a future too”
