Yield testing of the non-glutinous rice “Hom Siam” in rainfed areas on farmers' plots

In 2020, participatory trials of the yield potential and stability of the non-glutinous rice Hom Siam were conducted with farmers, together with Bang Sue Rice Mill Fire Chia Meng Co., Ltd., in 3 provinces of the lower northeast: Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket.

Hom Siam was found to have an average yield of 531.6 kg per rai, 114.8% higher than Khao Dawk Mali 105 (average yield 247.5 kg per rai) and 29.3% higher than RD15 (average yield 411.2 kg per rai), because of higher yield components such as panicles per hill and grains per panicle.

In 2021, participatory trials of the yield potential and stability of Hom Siam were conducted with farmers in the north and northeast across 12 provinces, with 31 test plots over 21 rai.

Neck blast was found in 20% of Khao Dawk Mali 105 and 58% of RD15, while Hom Siam is blast resistant, so no neck blast was found. As for lodging, Khao Dawk Mali 105 lodged at 66% and RD15 at 59%, while Hom Siam showed no lodging, because it is short with a strong stem (about 20% shorter than Khao Dawk Mali 105).
