Sustainable Fragrant Rice Project 2015: Intensive Production of Khao Dawk Mali 105 Rice to Stimulate Aroma Compounds

· 6 min read

Preparing the soil and Khao Dawk Mali 105 seed Improvement

  - Collect soil samples and send them for analysis to determine the appropriate fertilizer rate - Plow in the stubble left after harvest while the soil is moist, together with 5 liters of bio-fermented liquid per rai and 200 grams of stubble-decomposing microbes, then leave it to decompose for 1 week - Grow a green manure crop (broadcast 7 kg of sunn hemp seed per rai or 10 kg of jack bean per rai); when it flowers or reaches 50 days, plow it in together with 5 liters of bio-fermented liquid per rai and 200 grams of stubble-decomposing microbes, then leave it to decompose for 1 week - Till the soil until loose and remove weeds; for transplanted fields, harrow to puddle the soil together with applying 500 kg of manure per rai along with 5 liters of bio-fermented liquid per rai

Preparing Khao Dawk Mali 105 seed

- Use quality seed from a reliable source - For broadcast fields, mix seed at 15–20 kg per rai with 1 kg of bio-fertilizer and 200 grams of Trichoderma fungus, together with 1 liter of bio-fermented liquid - For nurseries, soak the seed in water mixed with 1 liter of bio-fermented liquid together with 200 grams each of bio-fertilizer and Trichoderma for 1 night, then incubate wrapped for 12 hours so the rice roots sprout but not too long

Sustainable Fragrant Rice Project 2015: Intensive Production of Khao Dawk Mali 105 Rice to Stimulate Aroma Compounds

Stage 1 Seedling stage  - Nurseries should be sown in May – June Transplant in June – July - For broadcast and drill-seeded fields, plant from 15 June – 15 August broadcasting and then harrowing to cover to a suitable depth - Chemical fertilizer should be applied 5–6 days after transplanting or 20–30 days after broadcasting (if there is water) 1st application, formula 16-16-8, at 15 kg per rai - Spray herbal bio-fermented liquid at 5 liters per rai and Trichoderma solution at 200 grams per rai to prevent thrips and leaf blast   Stage 2 Tillering stage 50 days after transplanting/germination - Spray herbal bio-fermented liquid at 5 liters per rai and Trichoderma solution at 200 grams per rai to prevent stem borers and leaf blast - If the rice is found to be leafy with stem borers, cut the plants to 15 cm above the ground. Farmers judging that the rain will not pause cut the plants and then apply the 2nd fertilizer, formula 46-0-0, at 3–5 kg/rai after cutting Stage 3 Booting stage About 15–20 September - Spray herbal bio-fermented liquid at 5 liters per rai and Trichoderma solution at 200 grams per rai to prevent stem borers and leaf blast - Apply the 3rd fertilizer, formula 46-0-0, at 5–10 kg per rai   Stage 4 Flowering stage About 15–20 October - Spray herbal bio-fermented liquid at 5 liters per rai and Trichoderma solution at 200 grams per rai to prevent stem borers and neck blast - If other rice varieties are found mixed in, pull them out and destroy them outside the field - Take care that there is absolutely no water shortage   Stage 5 Building aroma capital (1) 7 days after flowering This is the stage after pollination when young grains form at the base of the flower and must build up the capital the rice will use to create jasmine aroma. - Spray the bio-product (formula 1)  5 liters per rai thoroughly onto the upper leaf blades and flower clusters in the morning - Lower the field water to about 1 span (khuep) above the soil surface   Stage 6 Building aroma capital (2) 14 days after flowering This is the stage when young grains can be seen more clearly and the panicle tips begin to bend. - Spray the bio-product(formula 2)  5 liters per rai thoroughly onto the upper leaf blades and flower clusters in the morning - Keep the field water at about 1 span above the soil surface   Stage 7 Stimulating aroma 21 days after flowering At this stage you will notice the grains starting to enlarge until clear liquid is seen inside the grain. - Spray the bio-product(formula 3)  5 liters per rai thoroughly onto the upper leaves and flower clusters in the morning - Lower the field water to below 1 span above the soil surface   Stage 8 Accumulating aroma 28 days after flowering This is the stage when the panicle is green and bends, and the grains are plump with hardening starch. - Spray the bio-product(formula 4) on the upper leaves and flower clusters thoroughly in the morning - Drain all the water out of the field   Stage 9 Preserving aroma 35 days after flowering This is the stage when the panicle has entered the soft-dough stage; prepare for harvest by letting the rice lie flat awaiting harvest. When it can be harvested, dry the grain only in the morning half-day until moisture drops to 14%.
