To become a good rice variety... it must be selected again and again. This time is no different.
The BIOTEC Rice Gene Discovery Unit, together with Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna, Ubon Ratchathani University and the Thasano Rice Research and Seed Multiplication Center, Lao PDR, under the cooperation project
“Community of Practices” Community outreach in Mekong region: Dissemination of new improved Mekong rice varieties to farmers via farmer participatory selection and sustainable farmer seed production, which was supported by the Generation Challenge Program and NSTDA, held a rice tasting and rice variety contest on Saturday 14 February 2015 at the Thasano Rice Research and Seed Multiplication Center, Lao PDR, to select good rice lines that meet the needs of farmers in the Mekong basin who eat glutinous rice as a staple.
The event included a contest of rice varieties selected and kept by farmers, tasting of new glutinous and non-glutinous rice lines, and cooking demonstrations of dishes made with rice, namely fragrant rice sausage, fragrant rice northern sausage, black glutinous rice ice cream, and glutinous rice with syrup. Certificates were presented to the winners of the variety contest, and prizes to lucky participants. The event attracted the interest of farmers in nearby areas, with more than 100 participants.
