The Rice Science Center and the DNA Technology Laboratory took part in a research exhibition organized by the Kasetsart University Research and Development Institute at the Kasetsart University Council meeting on 1 March 2021, in front of the Kampol Adulavidhaya Meeting Room, KU 50th Anniversary Information Building, to disseminate research and encourage discussion for building on and further developing the research.
Prof. Dr. Apichart Vanavichit presented the research "DNA technology and quality control of world-class premium Thai jasmine rice" by adapting DNA technology of internationally accepted standard to help increase the export competitiveness of Thai jasmine rice. The Department of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce (DFT, MOC), requires jasmine rice for export to be not less than 92% pure.
DNA-based rice variety purity testing system has been developed and improved to be able to test the variety purity of other premium Thai rice for export, such as Riceberry variety purity testing, Hom Num (soft fragrant) variety purity testing and Num (soft) rice variety purity testing, to meet new needs. The DNA Technology Laboratory (DNA TEC) has now adopted new technology using molecular-level testing methods for even greater accuracy, and in the future DNA TEC will continue to look for cheaper and faster technology for rice variety purity testing that can be done both outdoors and in the field, to lower costs for rice exporters' needs and increase the competitiveness of premium Thai rice in the world market.
