On 19 February 2026, the Rice Science Center held training, knowledge transfer and a demonstration of the “New Pla Kun” underground water storage equipment, installed at the Agricultural Innovation Learning Center, to raise the efficiency of water management in research areas and demonstration plots.
The training was attended by researchers from the Rice Science Center and staff from the Central Services Division, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, who learned both theory and practice. A team of engineers from the company that developed the technology shared knowledge and demonstrated its use in detail, from working principles, system structure, installation and checking readiness for use, to preventive maintenance.
The outstanding features of the “New Pla Kun” underground water storage equipment are that it is designed to store rainwater or surface water below ground level, reducing water loss from evaporation and preserving water quality better than open storage. In addition, the material structure is strong, resists soil pressure and external conditions, has a long service life, and uses little surface area, so the area above can be fully used for agricultural or public-benefit activities.
The system also supports water management during dry spells or water shortages and can connect directly to pumping or irrigation systems in experimental plots, increasing water security, lowering long-term costs, and supporting agriculture that values sustainability and worthwhile use of resources.
This event reflects the Rice Science Center's role in applying appropriate technology to research and farmland management, and in developing staff capability to manage water resources efficiently, concretely preparing for future climate change.
