Rice Science Center, KU, Drives the “Clean Air Rice” Project, Moving Forward on Developing Regenerative Burn-Free Farming Areas, Improving Air Quality and Adding Value for Chiang Rai Farmers
On 11 June 2026, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siwaret Arikit, Director of the Rice Science Center, together with Mrs. Rungrattana Chamsing, Deputy Director of the Kamphaeng Saen Extension and Training Office, and Mr. Suman Hoimala, agricultural officer of the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University, went into the field to meet and hold a briefing with a group of organic Riceberry rice farmers in Phan District, Chiang Rai Province, together with Jasberry Co., Ltd., to drive area development under the project “Regenerative Burn-Free Rice for Clean Air and High-Value Markets (Clean Air Rice)”.
The meeting aimed to build understanding of the project's approach, promoting rice production under regenerative agriculture principles together with not burning agricultural residues, to reduce fine particulate PM2.5 and greenhouse gas emissions, helping restore soil quality, protect the environment and raise the quality of life of farmers in the area.
In addition, views were exchanged on developing environmentally friendly rice production systems, managing post-harvest residues, and creating market opportunities for rice produced under standards that reduce environmental impact, which can add value to produce and sustainably increase farmers' income.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siwaret Arikit said, “The Clean Air Rice project integrates knowledge in science, technology and agricultural extension to support farmers in shifting to environmentally friendly production systems, reduce burning in agricultural areas, and add value to rice through markets that value sustainability, which will benefit farmers, communities and society as a whole.”
This field visit is another important step in cooperation among Kasetsart University, partner agencies and farmer groups in Chiang Rai Province in driving sustainable rice production together with solving air pollution and developing the grassroots economy to grow strongly in the long term.
