792 Kilometers… on the “Clean Air Rice” Mission in “Mae Hong Son”

· 3 min read

12 hours 35 minutes
is the time the Rice Science Center team of Kasetsart University took to travel from the university to Ban Pamok, Thung Yao Subdistrict, Pai District, Mae Hong Son Province.

The distance may be far… but if the destination is a community opportunity, distance is no obstacle.

This trip is part of
the Regenerative Burn-Free Rice Project for Clean Air and High-Value Markets (Clean Air Rice), funded by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).

We came with “Rainbow Rice” to encourage farmers to grow it, adding color to the land, creating a distinctive feature for the area, and building on community tourism.

But “Clean Air Rice” does not look only at what happens in the paddy.

We also look at the rice straw and corn stalks left after harvest.

If these materials are burned, they may become part of the smog problem, but if managed properly they can become raw material for mushroom production and be processed further to create value.

🍄 From waste → to mushrooms
🍄 From mushrooms → to products
🌱 From knowledge → to career skills
💚 From not burning → to a better environment

This mission was supported by Ajarn Suwit Kamkongkaew, a mushroom production expert, together with Mrs. Rungrattana Chamsing and Mr. Thanet Srisuk, Senior Professional Level Agricultural Officers of the Kamphaeng Saen Extension and Training Office, and Mr. Suman Hoimala, agricultural officer of the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University, who shared knowledge from production to processing.

Because “Clean Air Rice” does not mean only rice that is not burned, but a concept of building an agricultural system that
reduces burning → uses resources worthwhile → adds value → creates income → strengthens the community

792 kilometers is therefore not just a distance

but a distance that carries knowledge from the university
into farmers' hands
and turns what exists in the community
into a new opportunity for the community
