 Rice Breeding

The Glutinous Rice Variety Thunya SirinIt resulted from cooperation among the Plant Biotechnology and Precision Agriculture Innovation Research Team, National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), together with Kasetsart University, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna Lampang, and the Rice Department, to develop a new glutinous rice line with broad resistance to blast disease, by crossing RD6, which is not blast resistant, as the female parent, with the non-glutinous variety Hom Nin.

Rainbow Rice, begun in 2010 (B.E. 2553) It resulted from crossing the male parent ‘Hom Nin non-glutinous white-leaf mutant’ with the female parent ‘Kam Hom Nin rice’, producing "Rainbow Rice", by the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus.

The rice variety Thanya 6401 is a non-glutinous, photoperiod-insensitive rice of medium maturity, with an upright plant type, strong stem, good tillering, resistance to bacterial leaf blight, and soft cooking quality. Breeding, selection and yield potential testing were carried out in the research plots of the Rice Gene Discovery Unit, National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NSTDA), Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus, Nakhon Pathom Province, during 2012–2016.
