The research team bred Hom Mali 80 through integrated biotechnology, emphasizing DNA marker-assisted selection together with backcross breeding to transfer the flood tolerance gene the team discovered on chromosome 9 into Khao Dawk Mali 105. This approach increases selection efficiency and shortens breeding time. As a result of these biotechnology processes, Khao Dawk Mali 105 with an added flash flood tolerance gene was obtained, while keeping Khao Dawk Mali's cooking quality and deliciousness (supported by the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology).
Breeding of Hom Mali 80 Rice
Hom Mali 80 was obtained by backcross breeding together with selection using DNA markers for the gene controlling flash flood tolerance. The resulting lines were then tested for flood tolerance in affected areas in various provinces, together with assessing acceptance among farmers who had grown the original Khao Dawk Mali 105. In 2007 (B.E. 2550), the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology respectfully presented the Hom Mali 80 line to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, to be granted as help or as an option for farmers in areas hit by flash floods.
