Hom Malai Man Rice #2 (Line M.2 6715)

A new rice variety innovation from research to Thai farmers: soft, delicious, with good yield, by the Rice Science Center, Kasetsart University

Hom Malai Man (M.2 6715) is a white non-glutinous, photoperiod-insensitive rice line developed from Hom Nin (purple non-glutinous rice) by inducing mutations (2005, B.E. 2548) with FAST NEUTRON radiation and continuous selection by the Rice Science Center, until an outstanding line was obtained with aroma, white brown rice, slender grains, good cooking quality and high yield.

Outstanding traits

  • Special aroma: natural fragrance
  • Soft when cooked: amylose as low as 16.7%, excellent cooking quality
  • Appearance: slender grains, white brown rice
  • High potential: average yield as high as 814 kilograms/rai

Variety characteristics

  • Harvest age: 110–115 days
  • Slender brown rice grain: brown rice length 7.96 mm, width 2.01 mm, thickness 1.82 mm
  • Internal appearance: white brown rice, little chalkiness
  • Paddy grain: golden-yellow paddy, no long awn
  • Amylose content: 16.7% (low range = extra soft)
  • Cooked starch temperature: low (alkali spreading value 6.0)
  • Hill shape: upright, strong (height 118 cm, stem 3.93 mm)
  • Flag leaf: width 1.52 cm, green leaf blade, flag leaf angle upright to the vertical panicle stalk, leaves rather slow to senesce

16 years of selection

  • 2005 (M0–M2): 100,000 seeds irradiated; growing M1 gave 75,264 lines
  • 2008 (M3): screening economically important traits such as aroma, yield and amylose, leaving 21,024 lines
  • 2014 (M4): selecting robust, drought-tolerant, high-yielding lines
  • 2018–2020: final screening, leaving only 299 lines
  • 2021: white brown rice with aroma, M.2 6715 (Hom Malai Man)
